“Shifty's been trying to ring me. I've gotta go home and wait for him.”

She saw the tears in her mother's eyes as she turned to go.

No, it couldn't be Leanne she said to herself as she started up the car. But she had a gut feeling something was horribly wrong.

Shifty rang minutes after Cheryl arrived at his house.

“What's Shorty's last name, Cheryl?” he asked anxiously, his mind playing tricks with him, his memory failing.

“Why, what's happened?” Cheryl asked, sensing the panic in his voice.

“She was shot, Cheryl, Shorty's dead. Look, just stay there, I'll be home soon to explain, but what's her last name? I have to tell the cops.”

“Walters, Walters…” she said as she lowered the phone.

“It was Leanne then, on the telly?” she said to Shifty's de facto, still unable to believe her sister was dead.

“I'd better ring mum.”

Cheryl fumbled for a cigarette and lit it as she braced herself to dial Auntie Maxine's number.
